About Me

Hello! I’m Abbey, the creator of the blog and Instagram account, @autoimmuneabbey. I’m a 20-something spoonie, an INFJ, a wife, a runner, and a big fan of all things outdoors and adventurous.

My life turned upside down when I developed chronic migraine, undifferentiated spondyloarthritis, generalized anxiety, and dysautonomia back in 2015 and 2016.

As my symptoms started to snowball, I struggled with ongoing medical gaslighting, medical trauma, and a growing sense of fear and isolation. Doctors downplayed my symptoms and told me it was “just stress” until I started to wonder if I was losing my mind. But then one spoonie friend told me “It’s not all in your head. Don’t give up searching for answers.”

I took her advice, and I started advocating for myself until I finally got the correct diagnoses, and now I’m on the path toward managing my symptoms and recovering from my medical trauma.

I’m here to write candidly about my experience and advocate for spoonies. I want to lift others up who are fighting for answers, fighting to be taken seriously, and fighting to make their invisible illnesses more visible. I want to speak up about medical gaslighting, and I want to help end the stigma against chronic illness and mental illness.

I believe you. I support you. Let’s all go through this messy healing process together.
